Offshore energy

  • Prime central location

South Tyneside's location on the banks of the River Tyne puts us right at the heart of the UK's fastest growing energy sector.

With direct access to the North Sea, businesses here are ideally positioned to benefit from offshore developments at Hornsea (86nm), Seagreen (67nm) and Dogger Bank (98nm).

  • Strong supply chain

With over 5,000 energy related businesses located in the North East with an international reputation for excellence in oil and gas, subsea technology, marine engineering and offshore renewables, the Tyne has the capacity to beome a major hub for the installation and maintenance of offshore wind farms and service the supply chain that will grow from it, as well as building on its existing reputation in the oil and gas sector.

  • Riverside sites

A number of quayside and riverside locations are available, some with infrastructure already in place, enabling companies to set up operations quickly, conveniently and cost-effectively, including:

    • Tyne Dock Enterprise Park - located in South Shields, offering up to 7.1 hectares of land with Enterprise Zone status and 550 metres of direct river frontage. It's fully integrated into a mature logistics infrastructure.
    • Tyneside Works - a former chemicals site in Jarrow offering 13.35 hectares of land with 275m river frontage suitable for development of quay edge. The current owners are to fully remediate the site, leaving an office building and gatehouse with weighbridge.
    • Jarrow Green Business Park - occupying 5.3 hectares and located 250m downstream from A&P Tyne yard. The site has the potential for the creation of 375m quay bridge.
  • Relevant experience and skills

The region's heritage of engineering excellence in heavy and marine engineering, shipbuilding and offshore oil and gas extraction has resulted in highly skilled, available workforce, benefitting from labour costs for an engineer almost 15% lower than that of Aberdeen.

Its capacity in production engineering is particularly relevant to high-volume offshore development.

    Key skills include:

    • Cable and umbilical manufacturing and expertise
    • Ploughing, laying and subsea cable connection
    • Sea bed operations and undersea connection
    • Project management and design engineering techniques
    • Specialist logistics and professional services
    • Marine engineering and general engineering services
  • World-leading research, innovation and training

The region has a fantastic array of world-class R&D and testing facilities such as the National Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult testing facility, Tyne Subsea and the National Centre for Subsea and Offshore Engineering.

There are number of colleges in the area delivering bespoke training for tomorrow's energy workforce including South Shields Marine School, an OPITO approved training centre with a worldwide reputation for outstanding maritime training.
